About the Author

Timothy Baghurst is an Associate Professor of Physical Education at Oklahoma State University, US. He teaches in the disciplines of physical education, coaching science, fitness and skills testing in PETE programs, and ethics in sport. Over the years he has acquired a multidisciplinary background that includes teaching and coaching at the junior and high school levels and has studied and worked at several different universities both in the United States and internationally. He has published more than a dozen peer reviewed articles, has made national and international presentations, and serves as a peer reviewer for several journals. In 2016 he was selected as a Research Fellow of SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Educators) America. Anthony Parish is Doctoral Fellow of Kinesiology with an emphasis in Pedagogy at the University of Arkansas, US. Before working on his doctorate, he received a masters degree from Columbia University in Bio-behavioral Science. He teaches a variety of disciplines in physical education, coaching science, and health. He has more than 10 years of teaching experience at all educational levels and has coached several different sports. He has also worked as a strength and training coordinator and as a certified personal trainer. In addition, he is a former competitive bodybuilder.

Anyone even remotely interested in the runes has to start with this book. It is the perfect introductory, setting the stage for deeper discussions in the author's Runelore book. Between the two, the reader should have a beyond solid foundation for initiating oneself to the runes and all the potential energy they contain. Ignore those who would criticize the author's past associations with non-heathen communities. We as modern folk have had to traverse all sorts of foreign territory on our way back to our forgotten roots.

While Thorsson’s history of the runes is pretty spot on.. the methods he teaches for using them are not. Nothing in this book is based on evidence from the Sagas and Eddas or archeology; nothing in this book is how the Vikings would have practiced these things. It’s all modern methods that Thorsson came up with himself.Which is fine. There is nothing inherently wrong with using modern methods - but Thorsson does not even inform you that it’s modern. He introduces it as fact. Which makes the entire book (and the author) come off as very deceptive. And that is where my problem with the book comes from.I do not recommend this book (or any other book by Edred Thorsson). If you are someone concerned with being authentic in your practice, steer clear of his work entirely. If you aren’t as concerned with authenticity... then you may find this book to be helpful. But again; he will not separate fact from fiction for you. You will still need to do loads of research to do it yourself, which to me, makes it not even worth it.

If your interest is primarily mystical, as distinguished from academic, this is the book for you. The author holds a Ph.D in relevant subject matter, so he has the necessary background to present a work from a sound foundation.The author frequently states that the practitioner will “see” or “feel” certain results. It’s clear the author believes rune magic has real effects. If this bothers you, you won’t like the book. If this intrigues you, you probably will like the book.I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

What can I say, while it was not the first book written on the Runes in English, it surely set the standard for all future writings thereafter. This is the first of a three book series on Runes. The others are Runelore: A Handbook of Esoteric Runologyand Runecaster's Handbook: The Well of Wyrd.In Thorsson’s earlier writings, and Futhark falls under that category, the reader gets an academic quality, albeit, dry writing with historical accuracy; though he does not shy from offering modern ways of approaching the Runes, as he liberally utilizes early 20th century Germanic Rune techniques throughout his book.For the most part Thorsson offers a unique contemporary approach to working with the Runes: everything from numerological Bindrunes, yogic postures and hand gestures, to his protective Hammer Rite. While these and other practices are not directly connected to any ancient Runic practice, they’re still very effective. If that is not what you are seeking, then you might want to look elsewhere. Also, if you are looking for a divination book on Runes this isn't the book for you either. Check out his Runecaster's Handbook: The Well of Wyrd for that.I like Thorsson for his simplicity, clarity, and generally well-rounded approach to working with the Runes. The fact is, if we were going to base our whole Runic Path on what the Eddas and Sagas have to offer us magically, we pretty much would not be doing much. We have to extract what we can from the original sources and then create our own Path that is not only suitable to our time, environment and personality, but that honors and gives respect to our ancestors who’ve tread this Path before us.While we can critic Thorsson’s character and Path, we should at the very least give thanks for his efforts in setting a high bar for all future Runologists. He is a serious individual that knows his stuff, and whose helped solidify a Runic vocabulary that we can utilize in our discussions.Futhark might not be the best book on Runes anymore, but it is still an important read for anyone who wishes to know where many of our Runic practices come from. It is well worth its price.

I have always been intrigued by Runes and I own quite a few sets of them. I bought this book because I wanted a deeper insight into the Runes. I have a basic knowledge of their usage as tools for divination, but I wanted to know some of the deeper aspects. This book would be helpful for anyone interested in Runes, but some basic working knowledge of Runes would probably make this book easier to digest. There's a lot of strange words and information! This book is probably not something to just read casually. But I recommend this to all who feel drawn to the knowledge of the Runes.
